Placement and Post-degree Opportunities
In the five-year period 2002-06, the department placed 100 percent of doctoral graduates seeking academic teaching jobs in full-time positions in their first year, 62 percent of them in tenure-track or equivalent permanent positions.
From 2007 to 2017, the department placed 100 percent of doctoral graduates seeking academic teaching jobs in full-time positions in their first year, 66 percent of them in tenure-track or equivalent permanent positions.
Graduates in the last 10 years have started full-time work in permanent positions at institutions including the following: West Virginia University, Miami University, Marygrove College, College of Mount St. Joseph, Concord University, Roanoke College, Clarion University, Winona State University, Pittsburg State University, Westfield State, Slippery Rock University, and Murray State University.
Doctoral graduates of our program seeking non-teaching employment have gone on to careers in curriculum development, editing, and non-profit management with firms such as SABIS Educational Services, The Stelter Company and the North Union Farmer’s Market.
Roughly 50 percent of our Master of Arts graduates decide to pursue the PhD degree at Case Western Reserve or other institutions. Recently, those institutions have included the Graduate Center – CUNY, Purdue University, the University of Saskatchewan, the University at Buffalo, The Ohio State University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Texas – Austin, Christopher Newport University, and Emmanuel College. Others have gone on to work as editors, Ohio Statehouse lobbyists, university development officers, and secondary school teachers.
