Teaching Experiences and Opportunities

All new-to-CWRU graduate teaching assistants begin their teaching appointments as Writing Resource Center consultants, working with members of the university community on projects ranging from first-semester writing assignments to professional school application essays, from personal narratives to advanced disciplinary publications. After the first semester, graduate teaching assistants have opportunities to collaborate with faculty members in larger-enrollment courses, to lead semester-long one-on-one tutorials through the Writing Resource Center, and to take on additional instructional roles. Advanced graduate teaching assistants teach stand-alone courses, including: First-Year Writing (Academic Inquiry Seminars), Communication-Intensive Literature courses (Reading Fiction, Reading Poetry, Reading Drama), Introduction to Creative Writing, Professional and Technical Communication, and writing-intensive seminars related to their research interests. All graduate teaching assistants complete university and departmental pedagogical training, and faculty mentors provide individualized support for each new teaching assignment.
